The Playstation 3 is Sony's third generation video game console. It is in direct competition with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. One main feature of the Playstation 3 is the PlayStation Network which brings a whole lot of online gaming capabilities. It billed itself as able to do everything, meaning gaming, networking and multimedia. It includes a Blu-ray disc drive and was actually the first Blu-ray 2.0 compliant player on the market. That takes care of the general, now on to what you are all here for; my opinion.
If you have poked around my reviews at all, you may have noticed that the Xbox 360 only received 1 thumb down and the Playstation 3 is receiving 2 thumbs down. One could logically assume that I like the Xbox more. This is wrong. Initially switching to the Playstation 3, I couldn't have been happier or sung higher praise about the unit. First turning it on, it automatically detected my DNS-323 and allowed me to view and play all multimedia content on it. After months of fiddling with the Xbox 360, network multimedia was flaky at best. The Xbox menus were confusing and not very user friendly. The Playstation 3 just made sense. Everything was where you thought it should be and worked as it should. Then there was the extra fun features, such as the Other OS. Sony had actually left a feature so we could install another OS to take advantage of the Cell processor and allow us common folk to play with it (although I understand there was some tax break that made this worthwhile). Well, recently Sony decided to release a firmware update 3.21 which would remove an ADVERTISED feature. One of the main reasons I bought a PS3 is because it could be used to install linux and now I had to choose to either update and lose the Other OS feature or not update and lose more features (ability to join PSN, sync trophies, play games or movies that required firmware 3.21 or greater, etc...) Well, this seems like false advertising to TheKlassen, so I decided to email Sony and see what they say. My email: "Hi, Due to the recent update (3.21) I lost my Other OS option, and therefore a good portion of the functionality on which I based my purchase. This was an advertised feature and something that I specifically wanted. I understand I didn't have to update, but then I lost other functionality that I purchased and wanted. I am wondering what you plan on doing to reimburse me for the functionality that I purchased and you took away? Will I get a credit on the PSN or a cheque in the mail? I was always saying how great it was to move from Xbox to Playstation and got a couple of my friends to buy them, but with a move like this, it's hard to keep up the support. Please rectify this situation so I can continue to support your products. Thank you, TheKlassen". Their response: "Hello TheKlassen, We apologize for any inconvenience and frustrations you've experienced with the removal of the other OS feature. We sympathize with your situation, however, we will not be offering any type of compensation, refunds, exchanges or credits. All sales are final. I apologize for the inconvenience. Regards, Lisa U." Her email seemed a little cold and un-feeling. Now I understand that she has probably had to respond to quite a few emails of this nature recently, but perhaps the problem isn't with customers emailing, perhaps it's with Sony's decision to remove a feature that had a monetary value attached to it without any form of compensation. It would be like Toyota selling you a car that you purchased, in part, because it had a premium upgraded stereo and when you brought it in for an oil change, they decided that the stereo was a safety hazard, so they disabled it. Some people wouldn't fault them, as stereos have been shown to cause a distraction to drivers, however, at the time you purchased the car, the stereo was legal and you spent your hard earned money on it. Doesn't seem right to me.
